PTAR members who served as judges for the Basic Life Support (BLS)
competition at the 52nd Annual 2008 NCAREMS Convention in Hickory, N.C.
were (L-R) EMT-I Lindsay Crater, EMT-I Janice Pearn and RN Phillip "Skip"
Bradford. They performed those duties along with a couple dozen other judges
from Rescue Squads all across the State of North Carolina. Each judge must attend
special training classes and become certified in order to judge NCAREMS events.

The BLS competition consisted of a 2-Part scenario, where teams of rescue
personnel worked to free "victims" who were trapped under a large concrete slab.
Once they removed the "victims", and secured them on a backboard, they turned
the "victims" over to a different team of EMTs who examined and treated the
"victims" and prepared them for transport to a medical facility.

One of the "simulated" wounds the "victims" suffered was a piece
of metal rebar impaled through their leg.

The photo below shows an unidentified rescue squad member
participating in Part-1 of the 2-Part scenario.
