PTAR members who attended the 52nd Annual 2008 NCAREMS Convention

Several members of Piedmont Triad Ambulance & Rescue (PTAR) won trophies at the 52nd Annual North Carolina Association of Rescue & Emergency Medical Services (NCAREMS) Convention which was held at the Hickory Metro Convention Center in Hickory, N.C. on June 19-22, 2008.

PTAR Rescue Captain Dwight McDowell was part of a team which won a 2nd place trophy in the 4th Annual Durwood Evans Classic Senior Rescue Competition. This event was a "Technical Rescue Challenge" in which teams of highly skilled and experienced Rescue Squad members from throughout North Carolina competed.

EMT-I Cindy Reed and EMT Whitney Kirk received a trophy for 2nd place in the Basic Life Support (BLS) Competition.

Chief Paula Lineberry and Field Supervisor Patsy Hege earned a 3rd place trophy in the Basic Life Support (BLS) Competition.

And EMT-I Lane Doby and EMT Ryan Long won a trophy for 5th place in the Basic Life Support (BLS) Competition.

The BLS competition consisted of a 2-Part scenario, where teams of rescue personnel worked to free "victims" who were trapped under a large concrete slab.

Once they removed the "victims", and secured them on a backboard, they turned the "victims" over to a different team of EMTs who examined and treated the "victims" and prepared them for transport to a medical facility.

One of the "simulated" wounds the "victims" suffered was a piece of metal rebar impaled through their leg.

These rescue competitions are an important part of the training process for PTAR personnel. In each different competition, EMTs and Rescue Technicians put their skills to the test, doing pre-transport patient rescue, evaluation and treatment in simulated emergency exercises.

Each exercise is closely judged to determine the winners, with PTAR members EMT-I Lindsay Crater, EMT-I Janice Pearn and RN Phillip "Skip" Bradford serving as judges during the BLS competition this year, along with a couple dozen other judges from Rescue Squads all across the State of North Carolina. Each judge must attend special training classes and become certified in order to judge these NCAREMS events.

PTAR EMT-I Crystal Pate and PTAR EMT-I Robin Brown assisted in the BLS competition by playing the role of "victims" during the exercises, along with Bert Reed (a PTAR friend).

North Carolina State Fire Marshal and Insurance Commissioner Jim Long, and his assistant Wayne Goodwin, were present at this year's convention, and assisted with handing out trophies to the winners of the various events.

Piedmont Triad Ambulance & Rescue (PTAR) is one of the largest Rescue Squads in North Carolina. They have more than 70 employees, 25 volunteers, and over 16 Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances and other emergency rescue vehicles.

Formed in 1971 as the High Point Rescue Squad, PTAR is a private non-profit organization which provides all levels of emergency medical assistance, as well as rescue service, transportation for convalescents and wheelchair-bound patients, and "stand-by" service for special events in the Piedmont Triad area of North Carolina.

PTAR's local service area includes High Point, Greensboro, Jamestown, Archdale, Trinity, Asheboro, Thomasville and Lexington, and other areas of Guilford, Davidson and Randolph counties. The organization also provides transportation outside its normal service area, including many out-of-state trips.

PTAR currently operates out of four Base Stations, with their Headquarters Station located at 901 South Elm Street in High Point. They have two other Base Stations in southern Greensboro and northeast Greensboro, and recently finished building a new Base Station at 2011 Sandy Ridge Road, near River Landing, to better serve the fast-growing "Heart of the Triad" area. In addition they have ambulances housed in temporary quarters in Asheboro and Lexington. Their Administrative Offices are located at 1422 South Main Street, in High Point.
