During Our Annual Christmas Dinner, On
December 15, 2007, A "Stork Award" Was
Presented To EMT-I Tavia L. Starborn.

On Sunday, December 09, 2007, a Piedmont Triad Ambulance & Rescue (PTAR) unit was dispatched on a medical call for assistance involving a patient with back pain. Due to the nature of the event, the EMTs on board the ambulance were told by the dispatcher to respond "non-emergency" traffic on the call.

EMT-I Tavia L. Starborn and EMT Chris Harrison responded to the scene with a PTAR Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance, riding the call "solo" without any other First Responder unit being dispatched to assist.

Upon their arrival, they discovered that the reason the patient was experiencing back pain was because she was 9 months pregnant, and was about to give birth.

The EMTs quickly prepared the patient for transport to Women's Hospital in Greensboro, placed her on a stretcher, loaded her into the ambulance, and began the drive to the hospital – running "emergency" traffic.

Before the ambulance arrived at the hospital, EMT-I Starborn delivered a baby girl in the back of the ambulance, all by herself with no assistance – just as she had been trained to do – as EMT Harrison drove to the hospital as quickly as possible.

Everything went well, and they continued to the hospital, where the newborn baby girl and its mother were checked by doctors and declared healthy.

At the Annual PTAR Christmas Dinner on December 15, 2007, PTAR Chief Paula Lineberry recognized EMT-I Starborn and EMT Harrison for their efforts. She also presented each of them with a "Stork Award" lapel pin.

EMT-I Starborn has been employed by PTAR since March 2006,
and resides in the Oak Ridge community.
