Two teams from Piedmont Triad Ambulance & Rescue (PTAR) won trophies at the 53rd Annual North Carolina Association of Rescue & Emergency Medical Services (NCAREMS) Convention, which was held at the Greenville Convention Center in Greenville, N.C. on June 26-28, 2009.

PTAR Chief Paula Lineberry and Field Supervisor Patsy Hege won 1st Place in the Basic Life Support (BLS) competition. EMT Tabitha Story and EMT Whitney Kirk took 5th Place in the same competition.

The rescue competitions are an important part of the training process for PTAR personnel, where EMTs and Rescue Technicians put their skills to the test, doing pre-transport patient rescue, evaluation and treatment in simulated emergency exercises.

This year's BLS competition consisted of a 2-Part scenario, where teams of rescue personnel worked to free a "victim" of a simulated logging accident, where the "victim" was crushed by a large tree which had fallen on them.

Once each rescue team extricated their "victim", and secured them onto a backboard, they turned the "victim" over to a different team of EMTs who performed assessments of the "victims" and then worked to stabilize them, bandage and treat their injuries, and prepare them for transportation to a hospital.

Each exercise is closely judged to determine the winners. PTAR members EMT-I Lindsay Crater, EMT-I Janice Pearn, RN Phillip "Skip" Bradford and PTAR Chaplain Patsy Whitfield, served as judges during the BLS competition, along with a couple dozen other judges from Rescue Squads all across the State of North Carolina. Each judge must attend special training classes and become certified in order to judge the NCAREMS events.

Other PTAR members who competed in some of the exercises were Captain Dwight McDowell, EMT-I Lane Doby and EMT-I Bradley Stowe.

In addition, EMT-I Crystal Pate, EMT-I Robin Brown and Monica Stowe (wife of PTAR EMT-I Bradley Stowe) assisted in the BLS competitions by playing the role of "victims" during the exercises.
